On April 7, General Motors unveiled the Corvette Concept, offering one possible design direction for the next-generation C9 Chevrolet Corvette. Rather than a fully functional prototype, it exists as a full-size, highly detailed display model.
Unusually, this concept wasn’t penned in the United States but at GM’s new European design studio in England’s Midlands. The studio is led by 64-year-old British designer Julian Thomson, best known for shaping the iconic 1990s Lotus Elise.
Beneath its striking lines lies a mid-engine configuration, and its styling nods to GM’s heritage. Sculpted wheel arches recall the 1968 Corvette C3, a split rear window evokes the C2 Sting, and the helmet-style windshield is a salute to the 1962 Opel Monza GT Concept.
GM confirms that two more design studies for the upcoming Corvette have been prepared by other studios and will be revealed later. The current C8 Corvette – which debuted in 2019 – was the first mid-engine version of this legendary model.
